How to use Intelligent Mergefields
Intelligent Mergefields can be used to create templates which will pull up different mergefields depending on your data.
In our example, we would like the document to write "No Company" if the client has not filled in a Company Name. Otherwise, it should put in the Company Name.
Start the Rule in Microsoft Word
1: Click Rules from the menu.
2: Select If...Then...Else from the drop down list - the rule window will open.
Select the Mergefield to which the rule will apply, and add appropriate rule.
In our case, if the Client Company Name is blank (ie. they have none), insert "No Company", otherwise insert "Yes".
> Click OK.
The Merge will now appear in the document as follows:
Highlight the "Yes" and replace it with the correct Mergefield.
When run against a client, if there is a Company Name the document will write it, otherwise it will write "No Company".
Nesting
There is no way of simply saying "'if x' and 'if y' then 'write z'" using if statements. The way to do it would be to Nest the mergefields inside each other.
For example, let's say in our questionnaire if our subject is Self-Employed and he works full time, we would like the questionnaire to display "Please refer to Section 5 - Self Employment". Otherwise, it should be left blank.
We would write the rule as follows:
Firstly you would write the first part of the rule but leave Insert this text: blank, but if you have a text for Otherwise you should insert it here. In our example, Otherwise is to be left blank.
Then highlight the first set of quotation marks, and insert the next part of the rule there:
Note 1: In the above example, the answers are pulled out of a client questionnaire. When filling in the Compare to: section in the Rule, be aware that it is case-sensitive. It must be written exactly how it is recorded in Admin > Config > Claim Form > Client Questionnaire.
Note 2: To hide or show rules in your original template, press Alt F9.
